Job Description: Senior Legal Counsel (Asia)

Location: Malaysia (PJ office)

Reports To: Global General Counsel / VP of Legal

Scope: Regional Commercial + Local Compliance + Global Strategic Projects

Role Objective

This is a high-impact role requiring a seasoned legal executive to manage the full commercial lifecycle for the Asia region while serving as the primary compliance lead for the Johor manufacturing facility. Additionally, you will drive global legal operations through Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) initiatives and ensure seamless stakeholder alignment across Asia.

Key Responsibilities

1. Regional Commercial Contracting (Asia)
  • Commercial Lifecycle: Lead the drafting, negotiation, and execution of all commercial contracts across Asia, including Master Service Agreements (MSAs) and complex procurement contracts.
  • Regional Risk Mitigation: Develop and implement standardized regional contract playbooks that address legal nuances, including jurisdictional choice of law, dispute resolution, etc.
  • Business Partnership: Act as the primary legal advisor to Asia-based sales and procurement teams, ensuring that legal strategies are aligned with commercial growth targets.
2. Johor Plant Compliance & Operations
  • Statutory Compliance: Serve as the custodian of legal compliance for the Johor manufacturing facility.
  • Environmental & Technical Standards: Oversee compliance with Department of Environment (DOE) regulations, MIDA licensing, and local municipal bylaws (e.g., MBJB/MPPG).
  • Industrial Relations: Advise on labor laws and industrial relations specific to the Johor workforce, ensuring plant-level policies align with the local laws.
3. Global Strategic Projects & Stakeholder Alignment
  • Legal Operations & CLM: Lead the rollout and optimization of Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) software to enhance automation, reporting, and audit trails.
  • Cross-Functional and Global Projects: Drive global legal initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Management: Orchestrate alignment between regional business heads, global finance, and the executive leadership team. Ensure that legal risks are communicated clearly.
  • Policy Development: Standardize global internal controls and ethical compliance frameworks to ensure consistency across all operating markets.
Experience & Qualifications

Requirement

Professional Experience

  • 12+ years of PQE, with significant experience in both regional commercial law and industrial compliance.
Education
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB); Admission to the Malaysian Bar or a recognized Commonwealth jurisdiction.
Project Expertise
  • Proven track record in implementing Legal Tech/CLM solutions and managing large-scale global and regional projects.
Stakeholder Skills
  • Exceptional ability to influence C-suite executives and coordinate with global functional leads (Finance, HR, Ops).
Plant Knowledge
  • Direct experience handling manufacturing compliance, health & safety audits, and regulatory liaison.
